UHSB is proud to feature Dr. Justin Evangelist as guest artist for the Fall 2025 concert on Nov. 2, 2025 at 3:30 pm in the John Carroll University Dolan Science Center Atrium.
Dr. Evangelist enjoys a multifaceted career as a saxophone soloist, chamber musician, and educator. He has appeared throughout the United States in a variety of settings performing new works for saxophone as well as other classical and contemporary literature. An advocate for new music, Dr. Evangelist actively commissions and premieres new works that promote the saxophone in the art music genre, including music by composers such as Dustin Schulze, Sepehr Pirasteh, Cody Ray, and Kyrre Sassebo Haaland. He regularly performs throughout the United States as a soloist and as a member of the Red Rose Duo, a chamber ensemble committed to performing and premiering new music for saxophone and clarinet. Evangelist’s recent conference appearances include North American Saxophone Alliance regional and national conferences, the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, and the Society of Composers, Inc. Region V conference.
Dr. Evangelist’s playing has been recognized at the state, regional, and national level.As a chamber musician, he earned spots as a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music competition, North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet competition, and semifinalist in the Coltman Chamber Music competition. He was also named the winner of the 2019 University of Akron Concerto Competition and 2017 MTNA (OH) Young Artist Woodwind competition.
Dr. Evangelist currently serves on the faculty at The University of Akron (UA) where he teaches applied saxophone and coaches chamber music. Prior to his position at UA, he taught saxophone and fine arts courses at Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma City Community College, as well as held Graduate Teaching Assistantships at The University of Oklahoma and Central Michigan University. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a Graduate Certificate in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship from The University of Oklahoma, as well as a Master of Music degree from Central Michigan University and Bachelor of Music with a minor in Jazz Studies from the University of Akron. Evangelist’s primary teachers include Jonathan Nichol, John Nichol, Todd Gaffke, and Jack Schantz.

The University Heights Symphonic Band begins its 2022 Summer season with a performance May 20 at 8 p.m in the Eastern Star at Euclid Masonic Center at 27271 Tungston, Euclid, OH.
December 2021
The University Heights Symphonic Band historically takes the month of August off. This year, as a result of the pandemic, we had a later start to our summer concert season, which ran through August. Therefore, the UHSB is on hiatus in the month of December, but you can learn more about the Band’s mini-grant and plans for 2022 in our Dec. 8 presentation at the Future Heights Mini-Grant Celebration.

The University Heights Symphonic Band is participating in #GivingTuesday on November 30. Your support helps us afford to continue providing excellent free concerts in the Heights and across Greater Cleveland. You may donate anytime on our donations page.

The University Heights Symphonic Band will have an informational table – and candy! – at Tullamore and Lee at the Heights Halloween Festival on Saturday, Oct. 23, 4-7 p.m.. Come learn about the UHSB and satisfy your sweet tooth.

The University Heights Symphonic Band is now rehearsing at Coventry P.E.A.C.E. Campus in Cleveland Heights. Watch for our informational table at the Tri-C JazzFest at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights on Sept. 11-12! Then, on Sept. 18, the Band is the opening act of the 2021 Heights Music Hop at 5:30 p.m. You’ll find us in the mini-park at Meadowbrook and Lee in the front of the main stage.

The University Heights Symphonic Band is pleased to announce the 2021 Summer Concert Series. We have six concerts through July. Learn more here.

The University Heights Symphonic Band has been named a recipient of a FutureHeights Mini-Grant! The grant will allow the band to purchase new music written by BIPOC and LGBTQ composers and pieces that highlight various social justice issues, and the works will be featured during the band’s 2021-22 season.
